In the tranquil landscapes of Northern New South Wales, nestled among greenery and the echoes of a community’s resilient spirit, stands Mimosa Moon – home to one of Australia’s leading interior designers, Megan Morton. This unique property, designed with a blend of modern charm and rural warmth is a haven where the essence of ‘the good life’ is lived every day.

“Our home is located in the beautiful Northern Rivers on a large property that includes a small rainforest, creek boundary and 360 scenic vistas. The 120-year-old homestead is well positioned to appreciate the landscape, on a raised slope overlooking the land. The property was built by one of the original founding families of the area and consisted of a very large plot of farmland that was divided a long time ago, and now compromises several neighbouring properties. When I first saw the property, I could see the potential, not only for a comfortable family home, but a showcase for the varied passions both myself and my husband Giles share, as well as ample room for our equestrienne daughter, Bea’s ever growing stable,” explained Megan.

Initially a small four room cottage with a wrap-around verandah, over the last half century it has been extended allowing generous living and entertaining areas, without compromising its charm. Mimosa Moon is named after the native mimosa trees that grace its landscape as well as the moon which is ever present in the clear night skies. The recent ‘decorative renovation’ expresses Megan’s desire to ensure life’s pleasures are easily accessible; swimming, waterfalls, good coffee, and making the best of the views and pastoral setting.

“I often refer to my job as ‘house whispering’ as I like to let the building speak to me and tell me how it should be designed,” said Megan. “When we first moved here, I waited a long time to settle in before planning the changes that have eventuated in a very functional and efficient, but well utilised space. I wanted the family to come and stay, see how the existing house worked and then figure out what could be improved.”

Megan initially undertook minimal changes to the kitchen and dining area, only moving some utilities to the room’s outer edges to take advantage of more preparation and entertaining space, allowing full access to the exterior views. The new kitchen island, an old, high cedar work bench found in Hobart, is perfect for assembling meals and is a natural hang for family and guests. Off the kitchen and dining room, Megan created what she calls her Kosy Korner, inspired by her in-law’s intimate ‘dining for two’ space. Here the family have lap-top dinners and watch TV.

The renovation of Mimosa Moon successfully blends modern amenities with the timeless charm of a rural farmhouse. In deciding not to undertake any major building works, Megan’s choice of decorating materials was key to the success of the overall project. “When it comes to dressing your rooms, a curtain is such a sure win. We have made our curtains do more than just give privacy, we have used them to add colour, to add a sense of warmth and make a non-descript room into a charming one. The scale, the colour and the textile all play into its success.”

When deciding on window dressings, Megan was looking for beautiful practicality. “The window coverings were selected to enhance the property’s views while adding depth and comfort.” Located in an area prone to Northern NSW’s winds, sun, and occasional flooding, Megan chose Luxaflex® products for their durability.  Megan emphasised, “We needed the real deal when it came to window dressings and what we were going to reveal versus what we wanted to conceal. The window coverings had to add something to the property without taking away any of the vistas.” Luxaflex® products, including semi-sheers, floor-to-ceiling heavy drapes, and motorised blinds, were used to create a practical and beautiful solution for each room’s needs.

The blend of soft interior treatments with durable exterior ones provides a contemporary update to the home without the need for extensive structural changes. Megan chose this approach, believing the modern farm house was the perfect environment to balance softness and hardness. “It’s homey, but warm; modern but still country,” she explained. The abundance of soft window treatment inside and the hard ones outside have given Mimosa Moon its contemporary charm without knocking down a wall or excavating a single thing.

By incorporating durable and stylish Luxaflex® products, the home achieves a perfect balance of practicality and beauty. The use of curtains in Mimosa Moon goes beyond mere functionality. They add colour, warmth, and a sense of charm to the rooms. For the bedrooms, Megan chose Luxaflex® Curtains in Maddox Fabric, a classic curtain with good texture and highlight colours to add depth and comfort to the rooms, transforming the space and enhancing the overall ambiance. Bedrooms incorporate the softer tones of ebony, cream, and sky, highlighted with terracotta, rust, seafoam, and navy.

A standout feature of the home is the 12-metre-long curtain wall in the living room. With so many windows and so much to see outside, the idea was to make a wall of softness. Megan has chosen the Luxaflex® Curtain in Arbre Fabric in a soft semi-sheer neutral Froth colour. Backed with blockout fabric gives scope for various levels of light control and privacy, to have the dream wall fully closed, partly opened or opened fully, and is a wonderful way to add dimension and depth to a very open and overly lit room.

“The same Luxaflex® semi-sheer curtains without the blockout backing have been used for the dining room to complement the living room which is important when you are dealing with open plan,” says Megan. “Here we can diffuse the morning light without losing any of its splendour.” In the loungeroom, floor to ceiling heavy Luxaflex® Curtains in Wesley fabric in the colour Midnight have been used to create a room that feels much bigger and grander.

“As so much of our lives are outdoors, I chose old-style classic Australian fixed awnings above the dining room windows to protect the herb gardens on the back deck. A simple pair of Luxaflex® System 2000 Awnings in white canvas shelter the perfect afternoon spot and can be lowered as the sun sets for dusk cocktails.”

Continuing the use of awnings, Megan explains, “One of my favourite transformations has been the carport, in which we are leaning into our love of portmantaue and calling The PartyPort.” No longer just a carport, the space is a multi-functional outdoor room with incredible airflow, great views and wonderful atmosphere. Powered by the Luxaflex® PowerView® Automation system with motorised blinds, it can instantly transform into a party room, outdoor bar, or entertaining area. Without altering the traditional farmhouse structure, the carport has been elevated to new heights with Luxaflex® Evo Awnings. “I wanted to use the straight drops in the open garage to create a conservatory room, an extension of our living spaces. These were fabricated in Dickson fabric in the colour Hardlot Green – a green and beige stripe reminiscent of old caravan annexes, giving the nostalgic feeling of family holidays.”

One of the greatest benefits of window coverings is the ability to regulate a room’s temperature. A well-insulated window can reduce energy consumption as it relies less on air conditioning or heating to control the temperature of the room.

Did you know you can save up to 43%* on your heating costs with Luxaflex® Duette® Architella® Shades through the Winter months and up to 60%^ on your cooling costs through Summer using a Luxaflex® Evo Awning?

At the forefront of innovative design, Luxaflex® Duette® Shades are specifically engineered to provide both beauty and energy efficiency at the window. The unique honeycomb structure of these shades creates a layer of energy saving insulation as it traps air in its distinct pockets, keeping the home warm in winter, cool in summer and comfortable all year round!

Duette® Architella® Shades R-values~

A product’s “R-value” is a measurement of its ability to resist heat flow. In a home during winter, R-values indicate the ability of walls, roofs and windows to keep the heat inside. The higher its R-value, the more insulation a product provides. A fully-recessed, reveal-mounted Duette® Architella® Shade can increase the R-value of a 3mm single glazed window from 0.13 to 0.78, reducing the heat transfer through that window by 65%.

In order to achieve optimal thermal efficiency in your home, your window treatments must be raised and lowered at the right time of day. Opting for motorised blinds and awnings with timers or sensors can be a convenient solution, as they can be set to automatically adjust their position throughout the day.

Luxaflex® PowerView® Automation

With Luxaflex® PowerView® Automation your blinds can be operated with the touch of a button or tap of a mobile device or tablet. Additionally, with the PowerView® App you can also quickly create customised ‘Scenes’ or schedules to control your blinds all at once or in any combination you desire. Easily schedule those Scenes to move your shades automatically at a set time of your choosing, or simply coordinate with Sunrise and Sunset.

Combine external awnings, internal blinds and home automation systems for the best result year-round.

Colour Choices

Colour also comes into play when thinking about the energy efficiency of your window coverings. White, for example, has the highest reflectance and glare, while black has the lowest reflectance and glare. If you have a hot west facing room, having a light colour facing the outside will reflect more heat and keep the room cooler and more comfortable.

This reduces the load on your air conditioner and in turn keeps your energy costs down. But colour lovers shouldn’t worry, this doesn’t mean you will be limited for choice when selecting fabrics for your internal blinds. Certain products such as Luxaflex® Duette® Shades are available in fabrics which appear white from the exterior and coloured on the interior. This is particularly useful when having to comply with strata regulations which require a consistent external white appearance.

Plantation shutters have long been a popular choice in Australian homes. PolySatin® Plantation Shutters are made from a durable, non-toxic polyresin compound, and finished with a revolutionary technology, which gives them the soft, matt lustre look of freshly painted wood. This means you get the same look as wood, but with far greater durability and longevity.

There are several great reasons to select plantation shutters for your home:

MADE TO LAST

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters are made from an advanced polyresin compound that makes them durable and easy to clean. They are impervious to moisture, and won’t blister, peel, flake, corrode or fade. This makes them a great option for wet areas such as laundries, bathrooms or even kitchens. Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters are even backed by our 20-year warranty*.

FULLY CUSTOMISABLE

These smart shutters can also be completely customised to suit your home. You can choose from a wide range of designs, and the shutters are available in three classic shades of white. They can also be customised with stylish valances, distinctive frames, three unique louvre sizes and tasteful hinge finishes.

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters can also be customised to fit windows of various shapes and sizes. While there are some limitations and restrictions, PolySatin Shutters can be manufactured to suit arches (half circle, half moon, quarter circle and gothic), angles (right and isosceles triangles, top and bottom sloped), hexagons and octagons.

They can even be used as a versatile room divider, or a stylish solution for larger windows or sliding glass doors. And they’re available in a variety of different designs to accommodate this, including hinged, hinged bi-fold, bi-fold on track and by-pass on track.

MADE IN AUSTRALIA

Buying Australian made products is becoming a growing priority for homeowners and renovators. This shift reflects a growing awareness of the benefits of supporting local industries, fostering economic growth, and ensuring quality craftsmanship in their projects.

When you buy Australian-made, you’re supporting our local workers, and the value of your purchase stays on-shore. You also get the peace of mind that your product has been uniquely designed for our environment and weather conditions.

The following Luxaflex® products are made in Australia:

Evo Awnings / MagnaTrack® Awnings / Nordic Folding Arm Awnings / PolySatin® Shutters / Roller Blinds

INSULATION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters are completely adjustable, and you can control the solar energy entering your windows and doors. These shutters can also reduce heat flux by 20-58%1 depending on the degree of air exchange between the window and the shutter panel, saving on your cooling costs.

PolySatin® Shutters reflect inbound solar rays back to the outside during summer but can be opened to allow the warming sun into your home in winter, which also helps reduce air-conditioning costs.

SAFE AND NON-TOXIC

Made from a non-toxic polyresin compound, Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters meet the certification requirements set by Greenguard® for Low Chemical Emissions making them the ideal solution for all households especially those with young children.

Whether you’re renovating an existing home, or designing a new build, your choice of window coverings play a key role. There are all kinds of things to consider – light-flow, heating and cooling, operating models, safety and much more. However, there’s one key factor that can sometimes be overlooked: where your window coverings are designed and made.

Research indicates that 90% of Australians prefer to buy Australian-made where possible1 and it’s easy to see why. When you buy Australian-made, you’re supporting our local workers, and the value of your purchase stays on-shore. But that’s not all. Here are five other great reasons why we recommend choosing Australian-made coverings for the windows of your home.

#1 – FAST, RELIABLE DELIVERY

When you choose products that are made here in Australia, you’re less likely to encounter production or delivery delays. Our streamlined production processes and commitment to local manufacturing also allows us to deliver your products quickly and reliably.

Many Luxaflex window coverings are made-to-measure in our Australian factories. Our internal blinds and awnings are typically made in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Rydalmere, NSW, and our Luxaflex® PolySatin Shutters are made in specialist facilities in Yatala, QLD.

Known for their style, durability, and for being impervious to moisture, Luxaflex® PolySatin Shutters are becoming increasingly sought-after by Australian customers – so it’s important to know you’re buying from a local, reliable manufacturer. Made from an advanced polyresin compound, these innovative shutters are guaranteed not to blister, peel or fade, and can also be used all throughout the home, including wet areas such as the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

#2 – MADE IN AUSTRALIA, FOR AUSTRALIA

When you choose to buy from an Australian manufacturer like Luxaflex®, you also get the confidence of knowing that your window coverings have been tested in Australia, specifically for our climate and lifestyle.

For instance, our Australian-made Luxaflex® Evo Awnings are specifically designed to offer UV protection, privacy and insect resistance. They also protect internal furnishings while still letting enough light and air flow into the interior of the home. Plus, the range includes six different models and comes in a selection of beautiful shade fabrics to suit various styles of Australian homes.

The Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack Awnings have also been engineered and tested in Australia to handle our diverse and unforgiving conditions and is the most technologically advanced straight drop outdoor blind on the market. It’s also been tested to withstand wind pressures of up to 185kph by James Cook University’s Cyclone Testing Station, making it Australia’s strongest, wind tested, straight-drop awning2.

Here in Australia, light plays a key role in interior design, and in your choice of window covering. Luxaflex® brand partner, Neale Whitaker, said in a recent interview, “Light has the ability to transform a room and change its mood, and that is particularly relevant to us here in Australia where natural light is abundant but often harsh. To my mind, window coverings are one of the key choices in any interior design scheme, from both an aesthetic and functional perspective.”

Luxaflex offers a wide range of window coverings – all designed to manage the effects of the harsh Australian sun. Luxaflex® Roller Blinds for instance, are made in Australia, and include a range of options to help you control light-flow in your home. Patented EDGE® Technology provides a stylish look and smooth operation, and there are various high quality fabrics available in the range – ranging from complete blockout to light-filtering screens.

#3 – A SUPPLIER YOU CAN TRUST

Buying from a local supplier can also mean an extra level of trust and reliability. Rather than buying from an anonymous overseas supplier, choosing a company with extensive heritage and local presence can bring all-important peace of mind.

Luxaflex, for instance, has over 65 years’ experience, and is a trusted household name. We have also been responsible for several local innovations in window covering design and technology.

#4 – WARRANTY

We stand behind all our products and offer a 5 year Manufacturer’s Warranty (and a 20 year warranty on our PolySatin Shutters), so that you can enjoy complete peace of mind when investing with us. If you experience any problems, our network of Australian-based dealers is always ready to help.

#5 – HEALTH AND SAFETY

Buying locally-designed and made products also bring extra reassurance in terms of their safety and suitability for a family home.

Luxaflex products, for instance, are designed to foster a healthy and safe living environment. We constantly engage in thorough product and material testing, completed by independent organisations, to ensure we are meeting industry benchmarks and providing Australian homes with the highest quality products.

Our PolySatin Shutters, for instance, proudly comply with GREENGUARD Gold Certification standards. They have been rigorously tested and scientifically proven to emit low chemical and particle emissions, making them the ideal solution for all households especially those with young children.

We also work closely with the ACCC on Child Safety Regulations to ensure that our products meet the minimum safety requirements, and we are continuously developing new products to help reduce the risk of accidents. From cordless alternatives to motorised operation systems, we offer many innovative lifting systems designed with safety, convenience and style.

Written by Three Birds Renovations

As you embark on a home renovation journey, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of selecting paint colours, flooring materials, and furniture. However, one crucial aspect that often gets overlooked until later stages of the renovation process is window coverings.

Learn how Three Birds Renovations incorporate their window coverings planning from the outset of a renovation project.

Here’s why it’s essential to prioritise window coverings from the outset of your renovation project

Integration with Design Plans

Window coverings play a significant role in the overall aesthetics of a room. By considering window treatments early in the planning stage, you can integrate them seamlessly into your design plans, ensuring they complement the rest of your interior décor.

Power Supply and Automation

Luxaflex offers the option of amazing motorised window shades that open and close automatically with the rising of the sun. If you want motorised blinds the electrics for them should ideally be roughed in before the wall linings go on. Leave it until later and you might end up paying twice for a job that can be done once.

Budget Management

If you don’t decide on your window coverings until late in your reno, chances are you’ll be out of budget and left with the painter’s drop cloths hanging from your windows as an attempt to block the morning sun. Include them as a line in your budget from the start so that you know they’re accounted for.

Whether you opt for curtains, blinds, shades, or shutters, taking the time to consider window treatments early on will ultimately contribute to the success and satisfaction of your renovation efforts. We recommend visiting your local Luxaflex showroom to explore your design options and confirm your selections as soon as possible in the process.

The Awnings That Put The ‘Room’ In Outdoor Room

Our latest renovation is the one we’ve all waiting YEARS for – our very own Erin’s family home transformation. The vision for this project was to transform the tired brick home to a modern-day ‘Urban Farmhouse’ and at the top of Erin’s renovation wishlist was an all-weather outdoor entertaining area.

The existing porch off the kitchen wasn’t even big enough for a dining table, so we more than doubled the depth of the tiny back porch to create a new 5.5 x 12 metres entertaining area that has plenty of room for living, dining and a built in kitchen for the BBQ. This was the biggest structural part of this renovation but worth every cent as Erin’s family love to entertain and plan to spend most of their time out here.

And the good news is that she can… thanks to the Luxaflex Evo Magnatrack Awnings we installed. We’ve used these awnings in previous projects so we know just how well they work to weather-proof a space and they’re the perfect addition so Erin and her family can enjoy outdoor dining whatever the weather.

The new Luxaflex PowerView Gen 3 Automation means the blinds can be lowered when required and retracted out of sight when not in use, all via an user-friendly app.

This alfresco area gets a lot of westerly sun and in addition to protecting from this, these awnings maintain wind and rain protection as well as light control and privacy all year round. They’ll also help Erin save up to 60% on home cooling costs.

Luxaflex Evo Magnatrack Awnings have been tested in Australia and can be installed at an opening of up to 3.5 metres wide, and withstand wind pressures of up to 185kph, making it Australia’s strongest, wind tested, Straight Drop awning. The perfect addition to the perfect outdoor room.

Luxaflex’s range of Outdoor Blinds and Awnings are specifically designed for the harsh UV and demanding Australian weather conditions.

Outdoor Blinds and Awnings can help shade the windows of your home, which reduces the reliance on air conditioners helping to save you from significant energy costs. They can also provide an extension of your home entertaining areas by extending your outdoor living space.

DID YOU KNOW?

Windows are a big source of unwanted heat loss and heat gain in your home. Choosing the right window coverings means you can improve the comfort of your home all-year-round, reduce your power bills, and cut carbon pollution. Luxaflex has long been committed to creating energy-efficient products for Australian homes. Research recently undertaken exclusively for the Luxaflex® brand shows what kind of savings can be made by Australian households when they have an Evo Awning installed.

SAVE UP TO 60% ON YOUR HOME COOLING COSTS

You can save hundreds every year on your cooling costs. An awning shading a window reduces the radiant energy passing through the glass into the room. When the radiant energy touches an object inside it gets hot, making the room hot. Considering that up to 88%2 of a home’s heat gain in summer is through the windows and heating/cooling appliances use 41%3 of household energy, there are substantial long term savings to be made with the effective use of awnings, such as the Luxaflex® Evo Awning.

To provide Australian homeowners with a better understanding of the savings achieved with the Luxaflex® Evo Awning, independent modeling was conducted specifically to the Evo System. The savings will vary based on home construction, location, and orientation, as well as the type of fabric and colour of your Evo Awnings. External shading from Evo Awnings can reduce cooling energy costs by up to 60%1.

Awnings such as the Evo MagnaTrack can also create substantial savings on a home’s cooling bill. When combined with Luxaflex Spectra Sunscreen’s ability to eliminate up to 95% of heat from solar radiation, the Evo MagnaTrack Awning can bring you long term savings and help you feel comfortable all year round.

OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING

There is nothing better than enjoying an afternoon beverage or two with friends and family outdoors during the hot Australian Summers! Enjoy the perfect balance of sun and shade, whilst still enjoying the balmy summers breeze with Luxaflex® Folding Arm Retractable Awnings. Luxaflex® Folding Arm Retractable Awnings are available in a wide range of sizes, to suit every situation, from tiny terraces to large outdoor entertaining areas.

Create an outdoor or enclosed room just in time for summer with Luxaflex® Evo Awnings or the Evo MagnaTrack. The Luxaflex® Evo Awnings range includes six models and comes in a selection of beautiful fabrics to shade your home – all featuring famous high-quality Luxaflex materials and smooth operating systems. The six Evo models within the range are available with many extras, including heaters, fabric valances, and bottom rail brushes. Featuring a range of awnings that provide privacy, UV protection, and insect resistance.

LIGHT CONTROL AND PRIVACY

When considering an outdoor awning, light control and privacy are two main factors to consider. Luxaflex® sunscreen fabrics as featured in the Luxaflex® Evo Awning range come in a number of different levels of openness allowing you to select the amount of view-through in your awning, unlike traditional canvas fabrics which have a solid backing.

Sunscreen fabric open style weave provides heat and light control whilst maintaining your view. Perfect for reducing glare and heat, Sunscreen fabric is commonly used on straight drop and pivot arm awning styles. Dark colours provide a better view-through than lighter colours, while light colours provide better heat reflection. Luxaflex® Spectra Sunscreen is our premium external fabric range and offers incredible strength and durability from its use of fibreglass yarn with Enduris™ Glass Core Technology. Luxaflex® Sunscreen fabrics come with a 5 year warranty.

OPERATING STYLES

Luxaflex® Outdoor Blinds and Awnings can be operated with both Manual and Remote Control options.

MOTORISATION

Most Luxaflex® Awnings can be motorised for added convenience. The motors supplied are of the highest standard, reliable and backed by the Luxaflex® 5 year warranty4. Motorised electric awnings are ideal for hard-to-reach windows and for people who may have difficulty with manually operating very large and heavy awnings. Motorised awning solutions can be teamed with sun, wind and motion sensors to ensure the awning is always shading the windows to reduce your home’s internal temperature on hot days. These sensors allow the awning to automatically retract in windy weather conditions that could damage the awning. Selected awning motors can be run from solar power while most run from 240V hard-wired power and require electrical connection at installation. Operation via home automation systems and a variety of remote controls are available subject to the awning style selected.

MANUAL SOLUTIONS

If you would rather control your Luxaflex® Awning yourself, we have an extensive range of manual solutions that offer easy and effortless control. All of our control solutions have been cycle tested to ensure durability for the life of the awning and no matter which option you choose, we guarantee smooth operation for years to come.

The Plateau Project is an impeccably renovated 1960s postmodernist Australian bungalow on Sydney’s Northern Beaches—home to celebrated fashion photographer Georges Antoni, his wife Phoebe Ghorayeb, and their three young children.

When the couple made the decision to migrate from Bondi to the Northern Beaches, they soon settled on the beautiful suburb of Bilgola Plateau, hoping to give their three young children extra space and a more relaxed lifestyle. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Garigal National Park, this picturesque suburb offers the perfect combination of natural beauty, wide open spaces, and a warm, welcoming community.

The aim was to transform the existing property into an inviting and plentiful space that would suit their family of five, as well as sleep up to 18 extended family members on key occasions.

Set over three levels, this stunning renovation was designed by Rama Architects and interior stylist, Lara Hutton. It includes four bedrooms, a living room, guest living room, laundry, office, UV room, and beautifully landscaped gardens complete with a Mediterranean inspired swimming pool, lounge and BBQ area.

The home was finished using micro-cement on the floors and ceilings, with structural features such as columns and arches providing warmth and a homely feel. The overall tone is simple and monochrome, and Phoebe and Antoni leveraged a range of natural materials such as render, stone, travertine, and wood, to complement the creamy vanilla tones. High-end furnishings, artworks, and appliances add creativity and personality.

Ensuring an abundance of light throughout this family-friendly home was a key priority for the couple and their three children, especially Georges who is renowned for mastering light in his photography.

“It’s so much about him—everything’s about light, how it translates in space and how it changes throughout the day,” Lara Hutton tells Vogue Living.

“The unique aspect, capturing that view to the north, gave us that sense of freedom we were chasing,” says Antoni.

When it came to embracing light, the couple’s choice of window coverings was crucially important, and a reason why they chose to install Luxaflex® window coverings throughout their home. Here’s why.

GUEST LIVING

The guest living area of this unique home combines practicality and effortless style to create a tranquil place in which visitors can unwind.

Wand-controlled Luxaflex® Curtains in Orlane fabric and organic colour were chosen to create a soft, billowy feel in the space—while still enabling Antoni and Phoebe to control the flow of light throughout the day and night.

Luxaflex® Duette Shades in Calypso® fabric and in calla colour were also used in this room for privacy, and for all-important thermal control. With their unique honeycomb structure, these shades trap air—enabling passive heating and cooling of the home’s interiors.

“Being north facing, the home required window furnishings to help control the light and heat of the day. We were also a big stickler for the tones, colours and textures used in the house so we were stoked when we found a cool textured blind that exactly matched our wall colours. It was a match made in window covering heaven,” says Phoebe.

“When we were choosing finishings and appliances for this project we really looked for the perfect combination of quality, functionality and uncompromised aesthetics and design – Luxaflex® window coverings were the perfect combination. But the clinch pin for us was the electronic bending tracks for the automated curtains around our curved windows. This was such an important contributor to our choice in window coverings,” she adds.

Connectedness is key to this home in all aspects and an integral piece of the design story was to build in as many opportunities for laughter, connection, warmth, and love as possible.

Seeing the family navigate and use the space while we are all at home is the best aspect of this home. Everyone can carve out their own area but still, somehow, we are all together. It’s unusual in that way but wonderful.

LIVING AND TV ROOM

On the bottom level of this home there is a large, multipurpose space that includes living, dining and kitchen zones—with views out over Pittwater.

The same Luxaflex® Curtains that were used in the guest living and bedrooms were added to this space—creating visual consistency throughout the home, and adding an element of softness. These curtains beautifully diffuse the abundance of natural light which flows into this north-facing home.

“The floor to ceiling sheers in our living room are a showstopper and help accentuate the ceiling height,” says Phoebe.

“The sheer linen material gives us enough privacy when closed but also allows us to catch glimmers of the sunset and silhouettes of the birds, which keeps us connected to the stunning outdoors, – it’s almost like looking at nature through a soft filter,” she adds.

BEDROOMS

The couple created visual consistency by using the same combination of window coverings in each bedroom: Luxaflex® Curtains in Orlane fabric and organic colour; and Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Calypso fabric and Calla colour.

The layering of the two window coverings creates a softness in the bedrooms and, importantly, helps create dark and tranquil places for sleeping. During the day the shades can be fully opened, and the curtains pulled back, to maximise the flow of light into the rooms. As with the guest living area, the Luxaflex® Duette® Shades also add an element of thermal control in each bedroom—keeping the interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

BATHROOMS

Luxaflex® Curtains were also used to add a sense of understated luxury to the guest bathroom and master ensuite of this home. These curtains, in Orlane fabric and Organic colour have wand operation which means they can be pulled back easily to let light flow into these spaces—or closed for privacy.

The Powerhouse Design Duo twins, Alisa and Lysandra, recently decided to put their design skills to the biggest test—a competition against each other. Each twin was responsible for designing, building, and fitting out their half of a huge duplex, creating two luxurious, unique, and very stylish family homes.

This 18-month project had extra significance as it’s where the twins now live: Alisa and her family in one of the homes, and Lysandra and her family, right next door, in the other.

Each of the twins took a distinct approach to the design: Alisa went for light, bright tones and natural textures throughout; while Lysandra opted for a darker, moodier and more opulent palette.

Despite the differing aesthetics, Luxaflex® window coverings played a key role in each home. Here’s an overview of how they were used.

Episode one: Master bedrooms, walk-in robes and ensuites

The master bedroom of each home is situated on the lower floor, and is accompanied by a luxurious walk-in robe and ensuite.

Setting the tone for her overall design aesthetic, Alisa chose natural timbers, wall panelling, and light tones. Lysandra opted for darker timbers and a richer colour palette.

For Alisa, it was important that her master bedroom remained bright and airy. She achieved this through a combination of Luxaflex® LumiShade® Window Coverings and a Luxaflex® Roller Blind.

The LumiShade® Window Coverings® combine the versatility of a vertical blind with the elegant appeal of a soft window furnishing – enabling natural light to flow freely into the space. The Roller Blind then allows Alisa to block out light when needed, to create a peaceful sanctuary for sleep.

To cover a skylight in the centre of the space, she chose Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Calla colour. With its unique honeycomb structure, Duette Shades also provide important thermal control – trapping air within its insulated cells.

Alisa added to the light and breezy feel in her space by adding a Luxaflex® Curtain in Chalk colour and translucent opacity to her ensuite, and Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Calla fabric in her walk-in robe.

Wanting to create a more opulent look in her master bedroom, Lysandra chose a Luxaflex® Luminette Privacy Sheers in Feather Fantasy colour.

Featuring softly curved, vertical design with integrated fabric vanes, Luxaflex® Luminette® Privacy Sheers are ideal for expansive windows or sliding doors. A modern take on a traditional vertical blind, these shades are made from soft fabric that provides daytime privacy, and the ability to rotate the fabric vanes to adjust the flow of light. They’re also made from 100% polyester and offer durable properties such as fade resistance and UV protection.

In both her walk-in robe and ensuite, Lysandra also chose Luxaflex® Pirouette® Shadings in Magnolia Light Filtering fabric. These shadings feature softly contoured, front-facing fabric vanes attached to a single sheer backing. During opening and closing, the vanes move in tandem for a fluid, graceful effect. The three-dimensional fabric vanes also give the rooms a striking and uniform look, while softly filtering sunlight and providing privacy.

We can never go past Luxaflex.

Lysandra

Episode two: Kids’ bedrooms and main bathrooms

Both Alisa and Lysandra have two young boys, and had a similar plan for their layout – to have the boys’ rooms, and a separate living space for the kids, upstairs.

Alisa opted to create bigger bedrooms with extensive storage, whereas Lysandra opted for slightly smaller rooms and a larger bathroom.

Both homes also had a third bedroom upstairs – which Lysandra converted into a gaming room for her boys, and Alisa turned into a spare bedroom.

Before designing this section of their home, the duo sought the help of an expert Luxaflex® consultant.

“Selecting the right window coverings can really make or break a space as they play such a major part in transforming the look and feel of your home. So, you can take your plans in, just as we have today, and a Luxaflex® consultant can help you select the right product for every room,” says Lysandra.

For her kids’ bedrooms, Lysandra opted for a combination of Luxaflex® Curtains in sheer fabric and Orlane Organic colour; and Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Moonstruck colour and Blockout fabric. She also added a Luxaflex® Roller Blind in Moonstruck fabric.

While the curtains add softness, the Luxaflex® Duette® Shades provide important thermal control in these upstairs bedrooms. Their unique honeycomb structure traps air within insulated cells, which helps keep interiors warmer in winter and cooler in summer. These sophisticated shades also add a soft aesthetic to the space.

“When you walk into this room, the height that the curtains create is actually quite unbelievable. The Luxaflex® Sheer Curtains finish off the room perfectly,” says Lysandra.

The Roller Blind is also a great, practical option as it can be easily rolled up during the day, or completely shut for privacy.

Alisa went for a more contemporary look in her kids’ bedroom – using leather coloured wall panelling, and circular wall sconces. Like Lysandra, she also used sheer Luxaflex® Curtains in a more neutral Chalk colour, and Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Calla colour.

“The beautiful Luxaflex curtains just add such a softness to the room,” she says.

Episode three: Pool and alfresco

Creating a welcoming pool and alfresco area was important to each of the girls, who both enjoy entertaining. While similar in structure, each of the spaces ended up with its own look and feel – in keeping with the style each of the twins had established in their interiors.

Both also chose to bring extra luxury and functionality to the rear of their home with a Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack® Awning.

The Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack® Awning has been engineered and tested in Australia to handle our diverse and unforgiving conditions and is the most technologically advanced straight drop outdoor blind on the market. It essentially creates an extra ‘room’ for your exterior areas – providing protection from the elements year-round.

“We’ve got the a Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack® Awning, which you can pull down if it’s sunny, windy or cold, and keep the fire in,” says Alisa.

Alisa also added a retractable awning to cover her pool area, in Dickson and Papyrus fabric, which provides important shade in the heat of summer.

“I’m going to use [the retractable awning] all the time. Bring on summer,” she says.

Episode four: Living, dining, and kitchen

When embarking upon this project, the twins put a great deal of focus on creating stand-out kitchen, living and dining areas—knowing it’s where their families would spend the most time. Their choice of window coverings was very important in helping them achieve their goals.

“Luxaflex are the best at what they do. We both opted to use the LumiShade so it looks like a curtain when you’re looking at it, but when you have the sliding door open you can just walk straight through it. So, if you’re holding something you can literally just get the curtains out of the way. And they’re super easy to just take down and wash if you need to,” says Alisa.

Lysandra selected Luxaflex® LumiShade® Window Coverings in Luxury Flax colour, as well as Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in the same colour. Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Moonstruck colour, to add subtle aesthetic variation.

These shades are both practical and stylish – adding softness and texture to the space, and helping keep the living areas warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Alisa also opted for Luxaflex® LumiShade® Window Coverings in Flax colour, and the Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Daisy White – both in the highlight window above the kitchen, and the window in the family area.

Episode five: Hallway entrances, laundries & powder rooms

Sometimes it’s the subtle touches in rooms such as a powder room, or a space such as a hallway, that will have the biggest impact in terms of a home’s overall impression.

When designing their hallways, it was important for both Alisa and Lysandra, to let as much light flow in as possible, while also ensuring privacy from the street.

For this reason, the twins both sought the advice of a Luxaflex consultant, who recommended Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in top-down, bottom-up operation. This means the shades comes down from the top to let natural light flow into the space, while still retaining interior privacy. Both girls chose a shade in Daisy White colour with light filtering opacity for this space.

Episode six: Upstairs living, upper powder rooms and exteriors.

The upstairs living area was another core area of focus for both Alisa and Lysandra.

The twins each created a unique and welcoming space – each with its own distinct aesthetic. Both used Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Daisy White colour to both add thermal control, and to maximise the amount of light flowing into the living area.

“Sometimes you just want your own privacy, and with Luxaflex® Duette® Shades you can say ‘bye-bye neighbours’. And the room is just glowing. I couldn’t be happier. I’m so in love,” says Alisa.

“We’ve chosen Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in the same colour, so it’s the same consistency from the front of the house,” she adds.
